I recently completed a project on antibiotic killing of non-replicating populations of Escherichia coli and Staphylocuccs aureus (PDF). I am collaborating with Bruce Waqas Chaudhry, Nicole Vega, Rodrigo Gonzales and Bruce Levin on a study with E. coli K12 and temperate and virulent mutants of the phage l. The goal of this study is elucidate the conditions under which selection will maintain a temperate mode of phage replication, lysogeny, rather than a purely virulent mode. Another goal is to determine the conditions under which selection will favor the carriage of host-expressed genes on the prophage of temperate viruses rather than the chromosomes of bacteria.
